Biol 339: Ecology

Ecology is the study of organisms and how they interact with each other and their environment. This course is designed to introduce students to the basic concepts of ecology as well as encourage students to make connections between ecology and their daily lives. To accomplish this, students will not only learn about ecology in the natural world but also about the ecology of urban environment. Due to our location in New York City, students have a unique opportunity to experience first hand ecology in the city and learn how cities function in an ecological context. Lectures will be supplemented with in-class projects and field excursions to sites important to the ecology of New York City. At the end of this course, students should be able to identify and explain basic organismal, community, and ecosystem ecology in both the context of the natural world and urban environments.
